The Sistine Chapel is a pontifical chapel. Therefore, it is the private chapel of the Holy Father and also the seat of the Conclave.

As the Pope John Paul II said in 1994, when it was concluded the restoration of Michelangelo's frescoes:
"The Sistine Chapel is precisely, if one may say so, the sanctuary of the theology of the human body (...). It seems that Michelangelo, in his own way, allowed himself be guided by the evocative words of the Book of Genesis (...)in witnessing to the beauty of man created by God as male and female" .
